6 Days Marangu Route

Full Itinearary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation (m): 1800m to 2700m,
Distance: 7km,
 Time: 3 hours.
Habitat: Montane Forest.
Your six-day Marangu route itinerary will start when you head from the hotel to the Marangu Gate. When you get to the park gate, check in at the office and get ready to start the climb. Now that we have left the park, we ascend a ridge route that has been cleared through the rainforest.

The majority of the species on Kilimanjaro live in the forest, which is enveloped in mist and covered in moss beards. We’ll spend our first night at Mandara Hut, a cluster of wooden A-frame residences tucked away in a forest clearing. Flushing facilities are located behind the main cabin, and water is piped in from springs above the camp.

Day 2 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation (m): 2700m to 3720m,
Distance: 12km,
Time: 6 hours.
Habitat: Moorland.

Before reaching the area near the Maundi Crater where the rain forest and moorland meet, the road from Mandara Hut passes through a small patch of woods. After travelling for almost 6 hours, we will reach the Horombo Hut, where we will spend the night. Utilise the supplied hot water for washing.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation (m): 3720m to 4700m,
Distance: 9.5km,
Time: 5 hours.
Habitat: Alpine desert.

Our ascent into the Alpine dry zone continues as we pass the last water source at 4130 metres. We will completely fill our water bottles with water to last us till we arrive back at Horombo Hut in two nights. Currently, Kibo Hut is only 1195 metres from the summit. We’ll start our summit ascent tonight, so we’ll try to get as much sleep as we can by going to bed at 18:30.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation (m): 3720m to 4700m,
Distance: 9.5km,
Time: 5 hours.
Habitat: Alpine desert.

After breakfast, continue climbing into the habitat of the Alpine desert, passing the last water station at 4130 metres. You must fill up your water bottles with all the liquid you’ll need to last till you get back to Horombo Hut in two nights (unless you choose to pay for mineral water at Kibo Hut). You’ll complete the ascent that evening; the top is now 1195 metres distant. Around 18:30 p.m., go to bed and obtain as much rest and sleep as you can.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit

Elevation (m): 4700m to 5895m, Distance: 21 km, Time: 6-7 hours ascent, 3 hours descent. Habitat: Stone screed and ice-capped summit

You will awaken about 23:30 p.m., and after being given a cup of tea and some energy-boosting foods, you will stroll into the night, when the going will get quite tough as you make the last push to the top of Kilimanjaro. Hans Meyer Point (5250m), which is also a wonderful resting area, is reached along a rocky road that starts the hike.

After that, the path climbs zigzag-style to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is perched on the crater rim. It requires a lot of physical and mental effort to finish this section because it is fairly steep and covered in stone screed.

From Gillman’s Point, snow is typically encountered all the way up to Uhuru summit (5895m), Africa’s highest mountain. The amount of time you have to take pictures before the three-hour descent back to Kibo hut will depend on the weather at the top.

After a brief break, you gather all of your equipment from the ascent and begin the three-hour descent to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night. You eat your final dinner on the mountain that evening, followed by a comfortable night of sleep filled with vivid memories and stirring emotions

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation (m): 3720m to 1980m,
Distance: 18 km,
Time: 6 hours,
Habitat: Montane Forest.

On the last day of our 6 day Marangu route tour, we continue our descent (6 hours) to the Marangu Gate, where we will exit. This is also where our summit certificates will be given out. At Marangu Gate, a van will be waiting to take you back to your hotel or the airport.
